For several years, wrestling fans were accustomed to seeing a WWE Diva on the cover of Playboy as part of the events leading to WrestleMania. We take a nostalgic look back at those covers and the relationship between Playboy and the WWE. Within months of the release of the magazine, Sable left the WWE and reappeared on the September cover of the magazine. Shortly after that, a magazine dedicated exclusively to Sable and her two pictorials hit store shelves. Chyna appeared on the cover of the magazine in the fall of The following year, she left the WWE, and in , she reappeared on the cover of Playboy. Unlike Sable , who got a special magazine after her second appearance, Chyna instead was given a video diary entitled "Joanie Laurer, Nude Wrestling Superstar. Torrie Wilson appeared on the cover of the May edition of the magazine.

Instead, I will sum them up in one phrase each. The spread honestly does its best to bring out the femininity of Chyna—hair blowing in the wind in one scene, showering in the next. It also tries to accentuate her muscle-bound body by featuring her in a chain-like outfit set in a futuristic background. Although, she seemed set to fail from the start. Wilson, of course, was followed by a dual spread with Sable. With the shock of any WWE Diva posing for Playboy gone—as well as the shock value produced by Chyna and the good girl no one expected in Wilson—it didn't matter who went next. No matter what, it wouldn't be as good.
When you're a young wrestling fan, the wrestling world defines your existence. Your heroes are stars of the squared circle and half of your day consists of giving friends the Stone Cold Stunner or The People's Elbow.
